Teachings on Samaya

Sunday February 28th & March 7th, 2-6pm

Berkeley Shambhala Streetspace

Over two weekends, Jigme Rinpoche will offer teachings on 'samaya', the commitments involved in Vajrayana Buddhism -- how they are defined, and keeping and breaking them. The talks are suitable for anyone who is doing Vajrayana practices or is thinking about doing so.

Every empowerment involves samaya, as do many relationships with teachers and fellow sangha. Samaya is not just about keeping numerical commitments, or being nice and friendly; it relates to how we understand our experiences. When we understand how samaya works, we perceive everything much more clearly -- both our interpersonal relationships, and also phenomena in general -- and thus our view, meditation and conduct can become stable and pure. Maintaining samaya properly means our meditation will be strong, and can be a source of joy and confidence in practice.

All are welcome, including children who are able to play quietly in the front room with adult supervision. The suggested donation is $15-$20, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Address: 2177 Bancroft Avenue, Berkeley. Click for directions and parking.

Teaching on Barched Lamsel

March 28th , 2-6pm

Berkeley Shambhala Streetspace

Why do we make supplications to Guru Rinpoche, and how should we relate to him in the context of prayers such as the Barched Lamsel? --

Guru Rinpoche, embodiment of buddhas of the three times, Guru who is great bliss, lord of all accomplishments;
Guru who is the dynamic and wrathful tamer of maras, dispeller of all hindrances - I pray to you.
Bestow your blessings. Please remove all outer, inner, and secret obstacles,
and grant your blessings that our wishes be spontaneously accomplished.

These are the words spoken by Padmasambhava and revealed as a treasure by Terchen Chogyur Lingpa, and in various forms this supplication is relied upon by many lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Many people who have done retreats with Chagdud Rinpoche or other lamas will know this prayer from reciting it in preparation for extensive practice, and also may have experienced its benefits when it has been suggested as a focus for their personal practice during difficult times. It is considered a very powerful prayer for the removal of obstacles, and is particularly significant in troubled, degenerating times.

Jigme Tromge Rinpoche will teach on the Barched Lamsel on Sunday March 28th from 2 - 6pm at Berkeley Shambhala Streetspace, explaining its purpose, and also how we can interpret concepts such as hindrances and obstacles.

No previous study or practice experience is necessary -- all are welcome, including children who are able to play quietly in the front room with adult supervision. Suggested donation is $15-20 but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

Address: 2177 Bancroft Avenue, Berkeley. Click for directions and parking.

Meditation Practice and Q&A with Jigme Rinpoche

Easter Weekend April 3rd-4th, Saturday April 24th

Padmasambhava Peace Institute, Cazadero

We are delighted to announce that Jigme Rinpoche will lead weekend meditation sessions comprising instruction, practice, and question-answer periods, in the peaceful setting of the PPI shrine-room. These days will be suitable for both experienced meditators and also beginners who wish to have more guidance, and there will be enough room for floor and chair seating. Please note the emphasis will be on actual sitting practice rather than extensive teaching, although there will be time to clarify questions with Rinpoche, and study materials are available from the library. Everyone is welcome to stay on after 5.30pm to make use of the library or simply continue with some more sitting, until 8pm -- please just be sure to bring your own food.

All events are free of charge, although donations are always welcome, and it is traditional to make an offering to the teacher. If retreatants choose to stay overnight there is a charge for meals and dormitory accommodation.

April 24th schedule

The day will run from 9.30am to 5.30pm, with a morning, lunch and afternoon break. Brown-bag lunch please. Note we will NOT serve breakfast or dinner unless retreatants have pre-arranged an overnight stay with the treasurer (see 'FOR ALL EVENTS' below).

Easter Weekend April 3rd-4th schedule

Sat: -- 9.30 - 5.30pm as above plus optional evening sitting.

Sun: -- 6.30-8.30am sitting; 8.30-9am breakfast; 9.30-noon Sunday puja; lunch till 1.00pm followed by Easter Egg Hunt; 2.30-5.30pm sitting. Parents please bring your own Easter Egg goodies -- we will help hide them!

If you wish to stay overnight during the retreat, there is a $30 charge to cover Saturday dinner, dormitory accommodation, and Sunday breakfast and lunch.

FOR ALL EVENTS -- To keep costs down, please bring a brown-bag lunch. Hot and cold drinks will be available in the dining-hall. Parents are welcome to bring children, but please note full-time supervision must be arranged with another adult. Cushions for sitting are available but please bring your own if you are more comfortable with that.

Ngondro Practice Days

3rd Saturday of the month

March 20, April 17

These Saturdays, running since May last year, are a chance to do some ngondro practice with others on the same path, in a supportive environment. This kind of intensive focus once a month is invaluable for helping maintain a solid, regular practice at home, and increases the harmony and strength of the sangha. Wherever you are at with your ngondro, come along for as much of the day as you can, and if you wish, stay over for Sunday morning puja. Because of different rates of progress, individuals will proceed at their own pace, rather than doing each part as a group. There will be a chance to clarify any practical questions with students who have already completed ngondro, and Jigme Rinpoche will also be around on some of the Saturdays, and for Sunday puja.

Parents are welcome to bring children, but please note full-time supervision must be arranged with another adult.

To keep costs down, please bring a brown-bag lunch. Hot and cold drinks will be available in the dining-hall.

Day-only retreatants: optional donation

Overnight retreatants: dinner Saturday, dorm bed (pls bring your own bedding), breakfast Sunday -- requested donation of $20.

ADVANCE NOTIFICATION REQUIRED. So that we can plan meals and beds, please call us on 707 632 5629 or email reservations@blackmountaincenter.com

Rigdzin Dupa 100,000 Tsog Offerings Retreat

June 18-20, 2010, PPI

This annual Rigdzin Dupa ('Gathering of Awareness-Holders') Retreat is based on the sadhana by the great treasure-revealer Jigme Lingpa (1729-1798) and constitutes the lama aspect -- here represented by Guru Rinpoche -- of the Three Roots practice of the Longchen Nyingthig lineage.

This classic Nyingma practice was very important to Chagdud Rinpoche, and Jigme Rinpoche uses it as the basis for the month-long Dzogchen retreat in Brazil every year.

This year Jigme Rinpoche will once again offer empowerment and lead the 100,000 Tsog Offering Rigdzin Dupa Retreat, and everyone is warmly welcomed to join.

OFFERINGS
During intensive practice retreats we make offerings of tsog and butterlamps. Tsog is a most profound method of purification and for gaining realization. Offering tsog and butterlamps are said to be two of the most effective ways for accumulating merit through generosity, and for occasions where we are doing a practice due to the kindness of great lamas like His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Khenpo Ngaga or Chagdud Rinpoche, it is particularly beneficial to make such offerings as a way to strengthen present and future connections with true masters. All dedications will be read during the pujas. Those who are unable to attend retreat but would still like to make offerings are also welcome to do so. Butterlamps are $1.50 each; tsog offerings can be in any amount.

There are several ways to make offerings:
1) with secure credit card donation processing online at www. padmapeace.org
2) by downloading a PDF form and mailing with a check made out to 'Ati Ling'
3) by calling the treasurer on 415-663-9421 to arrange payment by credit card
