BIOGRAPHY OF SUNGTRUL RINPOCHE

Tulku Orgyen, also known as Sungtrul Rinpoche, of the Tromge clan of eastern Tibet, was born in the Dragon year 1988 on November 6th,. His father is Jigme Tromge Rinpoche, his mother is Rigzin Wangmo Tromge and his grandfather is His Eminence Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche.

Tulku Orgyen is recognized as the speech emanation of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche.

Tulku Orgyen was conceived amidst auspicious signs and dreams, and when he was born in the shrine room of Chagdud Rinpoche’s remote retreat land in Oregon, USA, people far away had visions of Dudjom Rinpoche appearing. On the third day of his life, and then again some months later, he spontaneously recited the Vajra Guru mantra.

As a child he received from his grandfather Chagdud Rinpoche the treasure cycles of Dudjom Lingpa and Dudjom Rinpoche. When His Holiness Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche visited America in 1993, he said Tulku Orgyen was of extraordinary birth and should be raised with great care. In 1994 Jigme Tromge Rinpoche went to Chagdud Gonpa in Tibet with his son, and there the yogi Wonpo Ado offered a mandala to Tulku Orgyen as being the dynamic display of Dudjom. In 1999, at the request of His Holiness Mogtsa Rinpoche, Tulku Orgyen was brought to the great monastery of Kathog in eastern Tibet and before a gathering of 16,000 monks and lamas, His Holiness enthroned him as the speech emanation of Dudjom Rinpoche, bestowing upon him the name of Thubten Lodri Palden Zangpo Jigdral Dudlay Namgyal. The Dudjom incarnations have long been associated with Kathog Monastery because of Dudjom Lingpa being the sixth incarnation of the famous Kathog terton (treasure revealer) Duddul Dorje, who revitalized the Kathog lineage in the seventeenth century. Today, three incarnations of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche have been recognized, with the precious incarnations of his enlightened mind and his enlightened body being in Tibet and Bhutan respectively.

Tulku Orgyen was educated and trained in the USA and in Mindroling Monastery and Chokling Monastery in India, and from His Holiness Mogtsa Rinpoche he has received the extensive empowerments of the Longsal Nyingpo and Duddul Dorje cycles, and the Nyingma kama. He currently follows both a Western and dharma curriculum at his home in Rigdzin Ling, Chagdud Rinpoche’s main seat in North America.
